My Review: In a series full of hijinks and adventure, this third Cue Ball Mystery just may be the most fun yet. Jessie and Wilson are planning a perfect Christmas getaway in Hawaii, only to be joined at the last minute by her mother, his son, and Jessie's literary agent Louise. (Tessie is even more adorable and hysterical when Louise is involved!!!) Things get even worse when a dead body is discovered in Tessie's bungalow. Eventually Jessie finds herself in a situation similar to one of her romance novel heroines. (Her reaction to the wilderness, spiders in particular, is much like mine.) I also enjoyed the scenes where Jessie contacts her friends back home to see how her cat Snowflake and Wilson's two felines are co-habitating in their absense. You never know, it might just be a tryout for a more permanent living arrangement!

Even if you've never played pool in your life, this really is a mystery series you need to pick up. I would compare it to Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum...it's just that much fun.

An Excerpt from Capital Bride

New York City    April 10, 1867

On the other side of the door was her last resort.  Either this or prostitution and prostitution was not a choice.  She couldn’t raise MaryAnn in that environment, nor if truth be told, could she lower herself to live like that.  At least this way there would be some stability in her little girl’s life.
    Sarah took a deep breath, turned the knob, and walked through the door to a better future for her daughter and, if she were lucky, for herself.
    The office was small and precisely kept.  A single desk with a straight, high backed wooden chair, one in front and one behind, sat in the middle of the room.   She’d noticed the flowered curtains were open on the way in, curtains tied to the side.  The small area was flooded with dazzling afternoon light.  The walls were whitewashed and the desk well organized.  There were several tables with neat piles of files along one wall.  The other wall held several rows of pictures of women and men.  None smiling, as that was the way pictures were taken, but all appeared to be wedding pictures.  Below each picture was a small brass place with the names of the bride and groom and the date of the wedding.
     A small, woman in her late thirties with fiery red hair, sat behind the desk.  When Sarah got closer she saw gorgeous dark blue eyes behind the wire rimmed glasses perched on the end of her nose.  Her eyes were so dark a blue they could almost be called violet.  They were striking and clear, honesty shone from them along with a “no nonsense” attitude.
    “May I help you?” the woman asked.
    “Um.  Yes.  My name is Sarah Johnson.  I saw your advertisement for mail order brides.”
    The woman looked Sarah over, taking in her clothes, her hands clasped in front of her and ending at her face.
“First, let me introduce myself.  I’m Margaret Selby and I own Matchmaker & Company.  Please, sit down.  You’re older than the women we usually have.  You’re also better dressed and don’t appear to be hungry.  What would bring someone like you to my door?”
    “I’ve been living with my great aunt.  She passed away suddenly two weeks ago and the lawyer says I need to find other lodgings.  My cousin, William, has inherited everything except a small stipend she left for me.  William is selling everything.  MaryAnn and I have nowhere else to go.”
    “MaryAnn?”
    “My daughter.”
    “So, you are a widow?”
    Now was not the time to be less than truthful, if she wanted this woman’s help.  “No.”
    “I see.  How old are you, Miss Johnson?”
    “I’m twenty-eight.”
    “And your daughter?”
    “MaryAnn is five.”
    “Tell me, Miss Johnson, how did you come to find yourself with child at age twenty-two without being married?  Surely you knew how those things happened by that age.”

Meet the Author

Cynthia Woolf was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden.  She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.​ She worked her way through college and went to work full time straight after graduation and there was little time to write.  Then in 1990 she and two friends started a round robin writing a story about pirates.  She found that she missed the writing and kept on with other stories.  In 1992 she joined Colorado Romance Writers and Romance Writers of America.

In 2001, she saw an ad in the paper for a writers conference being put on by CRW and decided she'd attend.  One of her favorite authors, Catherine Coulter, was the keynote speaker.  Cynthia was lucky enough to have a seat at Ms. Coulter's table at the luncheon and after talking with her, decided she needed to get back to her writing.  She rejoined both CRW and RWA that day and hasn't looked back.

My Review: When I rediscovered my love for mysteries nearly 10 years ago, Cleo Coyle's Coffeehouse Mysteries was the first series I picked up. So many years later it's still going strong and I couldn't be happier. This series has a depth to it you don't see in every mystery...perhaps because the series has gone on for quite some time the characters have had more time to develop. I've loved watching Clare's relationship with Quinn grow, as well as her daily interactions with her business partner/ex-husband Matt, her daughter Joy, the delightful Madame, and all her quirky employees. I enjoy all the coffee tidbits in these books, and with this one in particular I loved the Christmas in New York setting and all the yummy details of the Great New York Cookie Swap. Clare's attempts to solve her part-time employee's murder while dealing with a real jerk of a detective, reality tv stars and a professional hockey player who can't keep his hands to himself made for an action-packed page turner.

My Review: I can't tell you how excited I was when this book popped up on my radar. A Christmas Carol is my all-time favorite story, so a cozy mystery set at Christmas in a town named Dickens Junction - it's like it was written just for me.

I was surprised at how this book veered from my idea of a traditional cozy - the protagonist is openly gay, and the murders are quite gruesome. In spite of this (and the fact that the political slant is so opposite my views it made me cringe), I really enjoyed this complex mystery. The characters were unique, the setting divine, and the revelation of the killer was a complete surprise...definitely Christie-esque. I would definitely visit Dickens Junction again.

The Clue is in the Pudding by Kate Kingsbury

When Armitage drops dead after Beatrice serves him some plum pudding, everyone assumes the huffy housekeeper is the culprit. But as Cecily begins to investigate, the list of suspects grows, and solving this case may not be as easy as pie…or pudding.

My Review: No Christmas season is complete without a visit to pre-WWI rural England via Kate Kingsbury's Pennyfoot Hotel series. I think this is my favorite one yet. Housekeeper Mrs. Chubb has been called away and temporarily replaced with Beatrice "Tucker the Terrible" who has everybody on edge. Things go from bad to worse when an actor staying at the Pennyfoot is found dead in his bed after Beatrice brings him some plum pudding. Could she have poisoned the pudding? Maids Gertie and Pansy certainly hope so...that's one way to get rid of the tyrant!!! But as Cecily starts investigating she discovers the actor was quite the ladies' man and was involved in a string of tragic affairs.

I enjoyed how much the Gertie/Clive and Pansy/Samuel relationships were featured in this book, and of course the annual disaster of Phoebe's Christmas pageant. I can't wait to see what will unfold in subsequent books with all the changes afoot. The mystery was a page-turner with a wealth of suspects that had very valid and personal reasons to see the Casanova dead.

I would love to visit the Pennyfoot during the Christmas season (in spite of the Christmas Curse).

Christmas of the Red Chiefs by Linda Lael Miller

My Review: When I pick up a Linda Lael Miller book it's usually a historical romance, so this is the first contemporary of hers that I've read. It's the story of Sarah, a recent widow who has moved back to her hometown with her stepdaughter Marlie to help her injured aunt run her carolling business, Barrels of Carols, over the holiday season. She's not close with Aunt Delores, and all Marlie wants to do is run away to her "Real Mother" who wants nothing to do with her. Sarah has no intentions of rebuilding her life in Bent Tree Creek...until she meets Delores' widower neighbor. A short, sweet contemporary Christmas romance.

A Christmas for Katie by Shelley Shepard Gray

My Review: It's hard for me to believe that with the enormous popularity of Amish fiction this is my first read in the genre. Of course it's obvious my first choice would be a Christmas novella! This is a perfect little story about an absolutely adorable child, a librarian searching for love, and a falling apart outdoor Nativity Scene (with disappearing pieces) that brings the two friends even closer together resulting in a magical living Nativity for their town. Even the revelation of the thief has a charming twist...this one is sure to put you in the holiday spirit!

My Review: I signed up for the Eve Hallows Blog Tour back in October because I was looking for an unusual Halloween read, and I enjoyed it so much!!! It was just the type of creepy YA fiction that I like - a departure from the usual vampire fare. The storyline and characters were unique and compelling. I have to say my favorite scenes were in Eve's father's pizza restaurant...absolutely hysterical. This is a timeless read that will appeal to young adults, teens, and adults. I was sent the second book in the series as well and look forward to the continuing adventures of Eve, her family and friends.

For fourteen-year-old Eve Hallows, life can be summed up in one word—horrible.  She has the most horrible friends.  She lives in a horrible old castle.  Even her family is a bunch of horrible monsters.
