True story: when I was a little girl I asked my father to cut a hole in the baseboard next to my bed with the hopes that a mouse family might move in. Unlike most people, I definitely have a soft spot for the little critters. I always keep a couple have-a-heart mouse traps set up in my basement to catch and release the occasional visitor, and each year my Christmas tree contains a healthy dose of mouse ornaments to go with my mainly cat-themed decor.
So when I was offered the opportunity to review a copy of Lindbergh: The Tale of a Flying Mouse, I knew that this was going to be an extra special children's book.
These are dark times . . . for a small mouse. A new invention—the mechanical mousetrap—has caused all the mice but one to flee to America, the land of the free. But with cats guarding the steamships, trans-Atlantic crossings are no longer safe. In the bleakest of places . . . the one remaining mouse has a brilliant idea. He must learn to fly!
Debut illustrator Torben Kuhlmann’s inventive tale and stunning illustrations will capture the imagination of readers—young and old—with the death-defying feats of this courageous young mouse.
This is book is quite simply exquisite. Not only does it contain a very important message for kids about the importance of perseverance and never giving up, but the illustrations are absolutely stunning. The sepia tones and archival quality made me even forget there were words on the page at times as I just got lost in the artwork.
Even the book trailer is a work of art:
