Proper Cat Nutrition to #GetHealthyHappy

As part of the Hill’s® Science Diet® "Healthier Pets. Happier Lives." campaign, I'm sharing tips with you on how to keep your pets happy and healthy. Today's topic is on the importance of proper nutrition.

How do you decide what to feed your pet? Maybe you have a favorite brand that you've always fed through the years, or maybe you decided to try something new that a friend or blogger recommended? For many of us finicky feline owners the answer may simply be, "I feed my cat whatever she will eat!" It's a personal decision but one of the most important ones you will make for your pet. Proper nutrition is essential to a healthy life, whether you have 2 legs or 4. Since our pets can't go shopping, they depend on us to choose what goes into their bowls, and don't they deserve the very best?

So where you do begin? Anyone who has ever wandered through the aisles of a pet store knows how overwhelming it can be. So many choices. So many ingredients. So many labels. A great place to start is by learning your pet’s health needs, something your veterinarian can help you determine during your pet’s annual checkup. Many pets have special conditions that can be best managed through foods specifically formulated with nutrients that can help manage those conditions. Whether your pet needs to lose weight, help with joint or oral health, hairballs (Truffles just raised her paw on that one!), Hill’s Science Diet has several foods within their product line to meet your pet’s special nutritional needs and help you give them a healthier and happier life.

The other factor when choosing a food is your pet’s lifestage. As pets age, their nutritional needs change, meaning foods formulated for puppies or kittens have different nutrient amounts from foods for older dogs and cats. The right nutrient balance for your pet’s lifestage can help prevent health conditions caused by nutrient excesses and deficiencies.

Once you find the right food it is extremely important that you make the transition slowly. Begin by mixing both the current food and the new cat food together. Gradually decrease the amount of the current cat food while increasing the amount of new cat food. Continue for a week until you're feeding the new food exclusively. This will results in fewer tummy troubles and a better acceptance of the new food. Helpful tips on transitioning a cat's food can be found here.
