Mudpie Interviews...Flapjack from Sarah Fox's Pancake House Mystery Series

Meows from Mudpie!

I'm so excited about the interviews I have planned in the weeks to come, both with fictional felines and real life kitties with amazing stories to tell. It all starts today with Flapjack, the feline star of Sarah Fox's brand new Pancake House mystery series. Thanks to NetGalley we read The Crepes of Wrath way back in June and loved it, so I was very excited to have a chance to interview Flapjack.

The Crepes of Wrath is on e-book shelves *today* and I know you'll be rushing to download it as soon as you finish reading our interview!

Mudpie: Welcome Flapjack, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today! Could you start by telling us a little about yourself and how you came to live with Marley?

Flapjack: Sure! I’m a handsome orange tabby cat with sleek fur and a great personality. My first human, Jimmy, adopted me from a shelter when I was just a kitten. He named me Flapjack because he owned a pancake house and thought the name would be cute. I’d have to agree! But Jimmy got sick and went away, and that’s when Marley came to look after me. She moved into my house, an old Victorian with lots of great snoozing spots.

What's a typical day like for you?

I start by making sure Marley gets up in time to feed me breakfast. She has an alarm, but I find it never hurts to offer a little extra encouragement by walking all over her or sticking my cute face up next to hers. Once I’ve had breakfast and Marley has left for work, I like to sit on the windowsill and watch the birds outside. Sometimes I try to catch them, but the pesky glass gets in the way! I also like to have a good snooze or two or three. Then when Marley comes home we cuddle and, if the weather’s nice, I sometimes go out and chase little critters. I especially love chasing grasshoppers! At the end of the day, I snuggle up with Marley on her bed.

Do you ever get to nosh on any yummy pancake house leftovers?

Not as often as I’d like! I’ll have to work on training Marley to bring me leftovers more often. I’m particularly fond of salmon…

Tell us about The Crepes of Wrath, the first book in the mystery series you star in...

In The Crêpes of Wrath, Marley moves in with me and looks after Jimmy’s pancake house while he’s in the hospital. When Jimmy dies under suspicious circumstances, Marley’s determined to find out who killed him, much to my approval. At the same time, there are other shifty things happening, like suspicious strangers lurking around my house. Marley inherits the pancake house and Jimmy’s Victorian, and she becomes my number one human, but she’s not sure if she should stay in the town of Wildwood Cove or move back to the big city. Her apartment in the city doesn’t allow pets, so to me the decision should have been an easy one, but humans can be funny sometimes.

Are you a crime-solving kitty? Do you help Marley solve the mystery?

I’m more of a moral support kitty than a crime-solving one. My cuteness and cuddles cheer Marley up when she’s feeling down, and I patrol the house to keep it safe from unwanted critters. That said, if Marley ever needed me to lend a paw (or a claw!) to help her out of a sticky situation, I wouldn’t hesitate to jump in. I bet I could provide a good distraction if needed!

Anything you can tell us about your upcoming adventures?

What I can say for sure is that Marley’s sleuthing adventures have only just begun, and I’ll continue to boost her morale with my good looks and cuddly nature. She’s a great human and I’m sure we’re going to have lots of fun together.

When Marley McKinney’s aging cousin, Jimmy, is hospitalized with pneumonia, she agrees to help run his pancake house while he recovers. With its rustic interior and syrupy scent, the Flip Side Pancake House is just as she pictured it—and the surly chef is a wizard with crêpes. Marley expects to spend a leisurely week or two in Wildwood Cove, the quaint, coastal community where she used to spend her summers, but then Cousin Jimmy is found murdered, sprawled on the rocks beneath a nearby cliff.

After she stumbles across evidence of stolen goods in Jimmy’s workshop, Marley is determined to find out what’s really going on in the not-so-quiet town of Wildwood Cove. With help from her childhood crush and her adopted cat, Flapjack, Marley sinks her teeth into the investigation. But if she’s not careful, she’s going to get burned by a killer who’s only interested in serving up trouble.

Marley McKinney has cherished memories of the childhood summers she spent in Wildwood Cove. Even though her life now is in Seattle she returns to the cozy coastal community to run her cousin Jimmy's pancake house while he recovers from double pneumonia. Then the day he calls her to say he's coming home he's found murdered. A rash of burglaries over the previous weeks has everybody in town talking, so when Marley founds some of the stolen goods in Jimmy's workshop she fears what it means. When a cherished employee of Flip Side Pancake House is named a suspect, Marley has no choice but to stay in Wildwood Cove and uncover the secrets behind her family tragedy. The only question is...when it's all over is she ever going to want to leave?

When I saw the cover of this book my first thought was how much I would love to live in that charming Victorian. And how adorable is little Flapjack the orange tabby??? All of the characters, even those that might be the killer, were extremely well-written and multi-dimensional, and I was kept guessing until the action-packed revelation.

I enjoyed every moment of this mystery from start to finish, and immediately found myself engrossed in Wildwood Cove living. It's one of those cozy locales that's a character itself; a place I would love going to on summer vacation and be tempted to never leave. The next book in the series can't come fast enough!

*Gasp*! The author isn't owned by an adorable kitty? Actually, the cover art grabbed my attention, too, so my kitties helped me read and will give the final editing help in the am before I post it. Great interview, Mudpie! You are an expert at helping your mommy!

PS I really enjoyed the book, also, and am looking forward to the next one! Maybe Flapjack will lend a paw or more in mysteries with Marley! (Jeanie)
