Mudpie's Cat Petting Preference Chart

Meows from Mudpie!

This fun graphic has been making it's way around the Instagram cat world lately and our sweet friends Olive, Rye and Fig invited us to participate. After filling it out we decided to post it here too and invite our friends to play.

Just to be clear, even in the spots I've filled out "Eh" and "Maybe" I never try to lash out or bite. As far as my tummy, I actually prefer my grandma's tummy rubs to Mommy's! (You'll see more of that on Friday.) And with my hip area and my cute little bottom, Mommy can't help herself from squeezing me down there and giving me "love spankings". It makes me yell at her!

Don't you think it would be cool if shelters started filling these out and putting them on all the dog and cat cages? It sure would prevent a lot of problems by showing grabby humans where and where not to touch!

We'd love to hear about your petting preferences, either below in the comments or by filling out the form on your own blogs!

  1. It would be smart for shelters to put these up!

  2. Using your chart, I would be pretty much all lavender. And what Lone Star Cats said! Definitely would be great for shelters to put up.

  3. Kitties are pretty finicky about where they want to be petted, and you felines are not afraid to nip either.

  4. It would be great for shelters to use these! Webster's would be mostly lavender, except when he's not in the mood for petting, and Paisley's would be lavender on all the top bits except the tail, which would be marked "No!" Belly, etc. would also be a big "No!" area.

  5. Mudpie, you don't seem to mind being petted anywhere. I purrsonally don't like my paws touched. ~Wally

  6. That is a cool chart, but ROCCO will try and bite me no matter where I pet him if he isn't in "the mood"

  7. My Hope doesn’t want her paws touched. Mudpie, like your Mommy, I sometimes “spank” Hope’s bottom and she goes racing around the house. :)

  9. Oh, this is such a wonderful idea, Mudpie! This would indeed be great if shelter cats and dogs had these filled out for them. We think yours looks mighty pretty, Mudpie. Now, each of the kitties here is going to fill this out, too. How fun!

  10. Now Sadie's chart would have her entire tail and backside in "I will bite!" She hates having her tail touched. I can't really blame her. When she was a kitten she had coccidia and had terrible diarrhea for months. She tired of having her bum cleaned up every day. LOL

  11. What a great idea! Most of us would be similar to your chart but some of us say NO to paw touching.

  12. Rosie agrees with all your spots except for the tail. No tail touching allowed.

  15. This is actually a really good idea! This would prevent so many shelter returns from people getting bit or scratched. Of course, these adoptive pet parents should try and work with the cat to find out preferences on their own, but I think this is much easier. :)

  16. Mudpie that is a really great idea for shelters. You are one smart kitty
Thanks so much for the support when Mr Buttons had to go over the Bridge. It was very sudden and he was a big part of our family. We miss him terribly as do so many as he was our official greeter. He never met a stranger only new friends.

  18. The problem for shelters would be that it depends on the person and situation. Heather would continue to purr and cuddle wherever I touched, but would growl--not bite--at the vet. Samantha is making progress (sometimes I can touch her paw pads now, and last night when I carried her for a few yards she held on with two soft paws rather than sticking her claws into my shirt) but still nips and/or scratches when startled, even if she's not being petted but just sitting on or beside my lap.

  19. Mudpie, that's a marvelous idea to put a chart like that with shelter kitties! That would help... what do humans say, err "break the ice" when a human comes to meet a shelter kitty. I luv the colors you & your momma chose to fill in your chart. Mom & I are "virtually" petting you in your purple areas, cuteness. Tee hee hee! -Valentine (& Mom) of Noir Kitty Mews

  20. My chart would be completely different for Pop and TW. It would also be different when I'm awake as opposed to when I'm asleep and it would be empty for the vet.

  21. That's a great idea, Mudpie and Mommy. Shelters should totally use this whenever possible!

Our Gracie would be pretty much all lavender. :)

  22. This is such a great idea! It would be nice to have an idea of a cat's likes and dislikes when you meet them at the shelter. Kitties can be picky about petting! It is nice to see that you know how to thoroughly enjoy a good petting, Mudpie. It looks like you will take a massage just about anywhere it is offered. :)

  23. This is brilliant! I have seen this on Instagram, and it's a fun idea. But if shelters could post this, that would certainly be helpful. I will be sharing this on my Instagram account.
