Book Review: The Trouble with Truth (A Gourmet Cat Mystery) by Kathy Krevat

Things are looking up for single mom Colbie Summers. After relocating back to her California hometown with her adolescent son and taste-testing feline, Trouble, shes ready to take her gourmet cat food company to the next level. Until helping a teenager gets Colbie mixed up in a fresh case of murder

Trying to balance her hectic family life with her growing business including a coveted contract with the local organic food store leaves Colbie scrambling to keep all her balls in the air. But when a Sunnyside resident is found dead in his garage, she takes on a new role: harboring a suspected killer.

The eighteen-year-old murder suspect, a former foster kid and Colbies part-time chef, had a powerful motive to snuff out the high-profile businessman. The real question is, who didnt? Sifting through the victims sordid history unearths a cats cradle of crimes, including money laundering and abuse. Now, to clear an innocent girls name, Colbie must sniff out the truth before a killer who smells trouble goes on the attack again.

Trouble the cat's tummy troubles led protagonist Colbie to cook for him which resulted in her starting a gourmet cat food company. Now Meow-io Batali Gourmet Cat Food has been accepted into a chain of stores! With her business quickly expanding, one of Colbie's new hires is an 18 year old girl named Mira, once part of the foster care system and now the writer of a screenplay about her experiences during that time. The last family she lived with isn't very happy with what she's written about them and demands that she put a halt to the play, so when her former foster father is found dead, Mira becomes the main suspect. Colbie knows her friend and employee isn't a killer and once again gets drawn into solving a murder, soon discovering there's no shortage of people who wanted the wealthy builder dead.

Sleuthing is only part of what Colbie has on her plate, as her young son Elliott's estranged father makes an appearance now wanting to be part of his life. She is also officially dating the farmer next door, Joss, and his doorbell ringing chicken Charlie once again provides lots of comic relief. A strawberry stealing rabbit is an adorable addition to the story, but of course it's Trouble who steals the show, as cat characters are known to do. At its heart this is a mystery series that focuses on a family, flaws and all, and I look forward to spending time in their cozy little world again soon.
