Fun Feline Finds: Window Perches

Meows from Mudpie!

Prime window whiffie season is finally upon us, which also means the time has come for Mommy to obsessively quadruple-check my favorite window seats for any weaknesses. I'm going to let Mommy refresh your memory about Tara's window drama for anyone who may have forgotten, and then I'll be back to tell you how I've found the purrfect solution!

It was late June and like every cat before her (and since), Angel Tara had adopted the screened-in bathroom window as her favorite spot for "snoopervising" her domain. I woke up that morning at 7, wandered into the bathroom, and discovered that at some point during the night the screen had broken and was now laying flat on the lawn.

Tara was gone...and did I mention that I had just adopted her 5 weeks earlier??? She didn't know anything about her new neighborhood. She wasn't even that familiar yet with her new name!!!

Always great in a crisis, I started running up and down the street (in my pajamas) yelling her name. My cat-loving neighbor, who didn't even know yet that I'd adopted a new cat, told me that at 5AM she had been awakened by a loud crash coming from my yard.

Two hours. Tara had been on her own in unfamiliar territory for two hours.

Now even more on the verge of hysterics I wandered back home into the backyard...and Tara walked out of the bushes right underneath my bedroom window.

My smart little monkey didn't decide to explore the neighborhood; she stayed right there waiting for me to come and find her.

Relief doesn't even begin to explain my feelings that morning...I don't think I'd ever felt so blessed in my entire life. Things could have turned out so differently. We were incredibly lucky.

Thanks for the refresher course, Mommy! Anyways, I've been trying to convince Mommy that we can completely obliterate her stress over me falling out the window by buying a window perch! I'm sure you've seen them advertised and some of you may even have one, they simply attach to a window or windowsill by suction cups, screws or velcro, and kitty has a safe place to lounge and watch the world go by.

But you know what Mommy said when I asked her for one? That she's afraid I've gotten too heavy and I would make it break off the window! Have you ever heard anything more offensive in your life? Talk about a pathetic excuse!

I'm not giving up my quest though! I've been studying this article on the best cat window perches and seats and have picked out a few favorites...

Do any of you have a cat window perch?
Which one would your kitty choose?
And how can I convince Mommy to buy me one?

  1. My human checks the screens here regularly once the weather gets warmer - one year, she hired a handyman to make sure all the screens were secure!

  2. Too big?!? I don't buy it! You're perfect, Mudpie. Maybe that's why your Mommy is so protective :)

  3. It's good your purrson wants you to be safe, but heavy?

  4. That was really scary and maybe that's why we never get the windows open.

  5. No window perches at our house, either, Mudpie. Us cat-moms are very protective, aren’t we?

  6. We're terrified of that happening, so we only open the windows a smidge so the furbabies can get some air. I've often thought of chicken wiring the outside windowframe, but it would look pretty tacky.

  7. Gotta admit, the suction-cup ones aren't impressing me, but K&H Thermo Heated Kitty Sill looks mighty fine, or even one without a heaty pad. Make her get one for you, Mudpie...you know how to do that!

  8. Gosh, what a scary story! I'm glad that Tara was safe! I've thought about those perches, too. But I think Woodrow is too heavy for them. I bet he weighs way more than Mudpie!

  9. You reminded us of Angel Mr Buttons big adventure. He knocked the screen out on Dads second floor window and he had the same early morning CRASH! Then Mr B ran up a tree and was stuck up there till Dad and his friend got a 40 foot ladder. He sure was happy to be home again. Dad has always checked screens 3 or four times every spring. Seems we all have the same desire for flight MOL
    Great story Mudpie

  10. Angel Rosie had an adventure much like Tara's. Rosie loved sleeping in the windows when they were open. I checked on her frequently, and during one such check, I did not find Rosie in the window. What I found was a busted out screen. It was nearly dark outside, and it was about to storm, and we lived next door to a beautiful yet not-so-friendly 120 lb dog. Luckily, though, Rosie had huddled up in the gutter splash block in the back yard, and though she wasn't keen on being held, she allowed herself to be picked up and carried inside. Whew. I'm so glad both Tara and Rosie had happy endings to their window adventures!

Now, I think all the kitties and myself would be excited for them to have a window perch. I'm going to look into the perches you shared here. Whichever one can hold the most weight would be the best option for us, because we have a big boy named Toby, and kitties who like to fight over seats. Purrs!

  12. That sounds very scary. No wonder you were frantic!
Your mommy is very rude about your cuddliness.

  13. I check my screens often. My hubby recently learned how to replace them too.

  14. That story did The Female Human in! I've fallen off the upstairs deck twice (35 feet into a ravine) and every time she thinks about it she freaks out. Now we go outside in our pop up catio. Plenty of room for all of us and MUCH safer!
