25 Years Ago...The Day Diana Died

Today we hope you'll allow us a departure from our regular cat coverage to share memories of a day many of us will always remember.

In all our lives there are world events that you never forget where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news. The first big news stories of my lifetime were when President Reagan was shot and the Challenger disaster, but I was really young and just remember being at home with my parents, not really grasping the gravity of what was happening. For me, the top 3 events that are as vivid in mind as the day(s) they happened are the OJ Simpson trial (I was obsessed), 9/11, and the day Princess Diana was killed in a Paris car crash - 25 years ago today.

It was a Saturday night and here on the east coast the news broke around 8PM on August 30th. I sat glued to the television with my family in shock, and then - oops, this isn't a completely cat-free post - when the news came around midnight that she had tragically passed away, I was outside in the driveway trying to break up a cat fight with my mom! After all those hours of watching and waiting the irony isn't lost on me that a cat played a role in my memories of that night.

It was now the wee hours of August 31st, a day I had circled on my calendar for months because I was scheduled to travel to Schaghticoke, New York's local fair to see Tom Wopat (The Dukes of Hazzard) in concert. As a huge fan of the show and his music, my parents agreed to the 3 hour trip as an early birthday gift.

The day was amazing - I got to meet him! - but it was still a bittersweet day and one I'll always remember as a very happy one for me personally, but a tragic day for the world.

Do you remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news that Princess Diana died?

Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 2022 #SundaySelfie

Meows from Mudpie!

We weren't really sure what to do this year for Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day. After all, just last month we honored Tara and Truffles on the anniversary of their journey to the Bridge, and last week saw the celebration of what was Truffles' Gotcha Day.

Since this special day falls on a Sunday this year we thought we would create a selfie collage of all the cats that came before me. There's not a doubt in our minds that Mommy's angel kitties are watching over us every single day.

We were heartbroken to find out that the Bridge gained another angel last week in the form of Sula, the San Juan Bautista Mission Cat. I was honored to get to interview her several years ago - one of my favorite interviews ever. Sula bravely fought cancer for the majority of her life. She was an angel here on Earth and now she's an angel in Heaven.

ABOUT RAINBOW BRIDGE REMEMBRANCE DAY:

This special day was created by Deborah Barnes – author, award winning blogger, and cat advocate in tribute to her cat, Mr. Jazz, who she had to say goodbye to on August 28, 2013. She shared the journey of letting him go in her book, “Purr Prints of the Heart: A Cat’s Tale of Life, Death, and Beyond,” a warm and heartfelt book that is written in the wise and comforting voice of Mr. Jazz himself as he shares his life and death journey to offer guidance and understanding through a cat’s perspective as to why sometimes letting a pet go can be the greatest gift you give them.

special event page for Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day has been created on Facebook so that people can share blog post links, pictures, poems, favorite memories, etc.

Caturday Art

Meows from Mudpie!

Our Caturday Art this week was created using Photofunia's Shattered Glass effect, but I think I look like I'm trapped in a spider web! YIKES!!!

Visit more artsy kitties at Athena's Caturday Art blog hop!

And now our weekly answers (all answered by Mommy this week) for the Friendly Fill-Ins challenge, hosted by 15andmeowing and Four-Legged Furballs!

1. I collect Day of the Dead kitties. I'm sure everyone expected me to say Conway memorabilia, but that's year round. This time of year I keep an eagle eye out for Day of the Dead kitties. I've already managed to find a few special treasures this year!

2. I recently treated myself to more Conway collectibles. Pretty much the only non-necessity purchases I make are cat and Conway stuff!

3. I used to enjoy baking from scratch back when I had the time.

4. Though I have never gone skiing, I have gone snowmobiling and snowshoeing.

Mudpie Interviews...Baby from Valerie Burns' Baker Street Mystery Series

In a brand-new culinary cozy series with a fresh edge and a delightful small-town setting, the acclaimed author introduces Maddy Montgomery, a social media expert who’s #StartingOver in small town Michigan after inheriting her great-aunt’s bakery…and a 200-pound English Mastiff named Baby.

When Maddy Montgomery’s groom is a no-show to their livestream wedding, it’s a disaster that no amount of filtering can fix. But a surprise inheritance offers a chance to regroup and rebrand—as long as Maddy is willing to live in her late, great-aunt Octavia’s house in New Bison, Michigan, for a year, running her bakery and caring for a 250-pound English mastiff named Baby.

Maddy doesn’t bake, and her Louboutins aren’t made for walking giant dogs around Lake Michigan, but the locals are friendly and the scenery is beautiful. With help from her aunt’s loyal friends, aka the Baker Street Irregulars, Maddy feels ready to tackle any challenge, including Octavia’s award-winning cake recipes. That is, until New Bison’s mayor is fatally stabbed, and Maddy’s fingerprints are found on the knife . . .

Something strange is going on in New Bison. It seems Aunt Octavia had her suspicions, too. But Maddy’s going to need a whole lot more than a trending hashtag to save her reputation—and her life.

Mudpie was very excited to have the opportunity to interview Baby, the canine star of this series. We hope you enjoy meeting him!

Welcome, Baby! Thank you so much for chatting with me today. Could you start by telling us a little about yourself and how you came to be under Maddy's care?

My name is Champion Crooner Ol’ Blue Eyes, One for My Baby. However, everyone calls me Baby. I was raised by a lovely human named Miss Octavia Baker. She found me as a puppy on the beach near her home in New Bison, Michigan. I was the runt of the litter and a scrawny little thing, but Miss Octavia fed and care for me until I grew healthy and strong. She showed me at dog shows and of course, I wanted to do my best for her, so I won. Now, I’m retired from dog shows, but people pay big money for me to sire puppies. It’s a RUFF life, but somebody’s got to do it. Anyway, Miss Octavia owned a bakery and we used to have a wonderful time together. She was a great cook and she made special treats for me. Those were good times. One day, Miss Octavia died and her great-niece, Maddy came to stay. Boy, was she green. She didn’t know how to do anything. She can’t cook. She didn’t know the first thing about dogs. I had to teach her how to do everything.

What's a typical day like for you?

On a typical day, I let Maddy get up first. I take a nap while she showers and gets ready for work. Then, I get up. A quick shake, and I’m ready to go. I eat breakfast and then we go to Baby Cakes Bakery. After Maddy opens the door, I take a tour of the building to make sure it’s safe. Then, I curl up and nap, uh I mean supervise Maddy and the other staff, Miss Hannah and Leroy. Sometimes, I greet customers. Maddy likes to take my picture and post them online, so I pose for pictures. I guess, you could say I’m a model. Good thing I learned how to pose during my time on the dog show circuit. Smiling for the camera is an art. The top dogs make it look easy. When the last customer leaves, then I escort Maddy home. Then, its dinner, a little cuddle, and then I make sure she makes it safely to bed. It’s exhausting, but I don’t mind.

Tell us about Two Parts Sugar One Part Murder, the Baker Street Mystery Series you star in.

Maddy used to live in Los Angeles. I think something happened. I know she was supposed to have gotten married, but the groom never showed up. He was a dummy. Anyway, Maddy was pretty sad, but when she heard that my human, Miss Octavia, died, she came here. Now, she stays in the house. She runs the bakery, although between you and me, she doesn’t know the first thing about cooking. And I look after her. Lots of people wanted to buy the house and the bakery. But Miss Octavia arranged things so that Maddy has to stay here for at least a year. Some guy got mad and when Maddy told him she wouldn’t sell him the bakery. They had a big fight and I had to come and show him who was boss. Nobody yells at my human and gets away with it. Well, right after that, the guy was killed, right there in the bakery. Maddy had to figure out who did it.

Do you assist Maddy in any way in solving the mystery?

Absolutely, Maddy’s new to New Bison, and she’s young and kind of naïve. I help her know who the good guys are. Like, my vet, Dr. Michael Portman. He’s one of the good guys, even though he pokes and prods me, and even gives me shots. He also knows just the right spot to scratch behind my ears.

English Mastiffs are such huge dogs, you must be very helpful at intimidating potential bad guys. Are you a tough pup or a softie?

Maddy calls me a “gentle giant.” I like to cuddle, take walks on the beach, and eat snacks. I put up with quite a lot from the kids who come in the bakery and want to ride me like a pony. However, if someone comes sniffing around my humans who wants to ‘cause trouble, well…that’s when I have to let them know just who’s the real boss.

Can you give us any clues as to what's next for you two?

Well, I don’t want to give anything away, but spring is the start of the New Bison Spring Festival. Maddy’s determined to continue Miss Octavia’s legacy in the baking contest. However, a new bakery is opening in town, backed by a guy named CJ Davenport. I don’t like the smell of him. Apparently, neither did someone else, because he gets himself killed. Maddy has to catch his killer before her goose is cooked.

Belated Happy 9th Gotcha Day, Angel Truffles! #SundaySelfie

Meows from Mudpie!

Mommy feels like the worst cat mom in the world, because shortly after midnight yesterday she remembered that it was Angel Truffles' Gotcha Day, and our post for the day was already up.

I suggested she choose one of her favorite pictures of Truffles as our entry in the Sunday Selfies blog hop this week. We only wish she was still here with us today.

And now our weekly answers (all answered by Mommy this week) for the Friendly Fill-Ins challenge, hosted by 15andmeowing and Four-Legged Furballs!

1. I would like to see what books are on anyone's bookshelf. I admit whenever I'm in someone's home I sneak a peek at their bookshelf if given the opportunity. I just can't help myself.

2. I adore cats, Conway, Christmas, coffee, and cozies...my 5 C's.

3. There is no amount of money you could pay me to give up a pet. I can't even fathom ever doing such a thing.

4. When I failed to attend Conway's concert in November 1992, I lost out on that opportunity forever.

Mudpie's Date Night

Meows from Mudpie!

You know how we've talked about our neighbor kitty Mo who stops by each night for a snack? Would you believe some nights we eat TOGETHER?!?!?!

This happens when I decide to have a bite of whatever he's eating. It cracks Mommy up because it looks like we're having a date night, but we're into safe dating...him on one side of the door, me on the other!

Don't go thinking this means I like him or anything though...a couple nights ago I hissed at him through the door!

Thankful Thursday: Gotcha Day Wrap Up

Meows from Mudpie!

I had the most pawsome Gotcha Day on Tuesday! I had squeezies, a taste of cream cheese from Mommy's morning muffin, a little deli meat. I got a couple packages of my favorite Party Mix Morning Munch. and yesterday Mommy went to PetSmart and redeemed a coupon I got for a free treat (squeezies, of course)!

Most importantly, temps were only in the 60s so Mommy and I had tons of cuddle sessions! It was chilly enough I even felt like playing a little, and in the evening Mommy helped me read all the nice Gotcha Day comments I got on our blog and social media.

Oh, and today is my grandma's birthday, so I bet I'll be getting some extra cuddles out of her too! She thinks I'm the cat's pajamas, and she's right!

I'm super thankful for one of the best Gotcha Days ever!

Happy 7th Gotcha Day, Mudpie!!!

Meows from Mudpie!

Seven years ago today my life changed forever when Mommy decided I was the kitty to fill the empty hole in her heart that Truffles left behind. We've told this story for the past 6 years on my special day, but it's a real life "fairy tail" and I didn't think you'd mind reading it again. I know that I never get tired of telling it!

It all began 10 days earlier with a series of photos posted on the shelter website. Mommy says she saw my picture and had the same feeling in her heart that she had the first time she saw Truffles. Still, she didn't want to make a hasty decision so she saved my picture to her PC and tablet and kept looking at it over and over. When she finally decided to call the shelter and ask about me it didn't take long for her to decide that I was the one.

She filled out the adoption application, gathered the needed references, and was immediately approved, but then we hit a bit of a snag. The shelter doesn't typically finalize adoptions before the prospective family meets the pet, meaning I couldn't be placed "on hold" (for lack of a better term) and when Mommy spoke to the shelter on Friday afternoon she learned that another lady had just stopped in and was very interested in me! Thankfully the nice shelter volunteer heard the panic in Mommy's voice when she reiterated that she just couldn't come get me until Sunday (they had already agreed to open the shelter just for us!) and said she'd do everything she could to steer the lady's attention to another cat. (People are just drawn to me...what can I say???)

So on a sunny Sunday morning Mommy and my Grandpa made the hour drive to make our union legal and bring me to my forever home.

She had never been to this particular shelter before and thought it was so beautiful. She especially loved the cat quotes on the walls.

She enjoyed spending a little time with Thomas, the shelter mascot, but her heart was pounding with anticipation to meet *me*!!!

There was a cute little tortie in the front holding room, and at first Mommy thought it was me! Then she was told that I was sequestered in the shelter director's office because I don't play well with others. Tattle tails!!!

As soon as Mommy saw me it was all over...I held her heart in my paws!

In no time at all the paperwork was complete and I was on my way home. Mommy rode in the back seat with me and I barely made a peep. We just gazed at each other as well fell completely in love.

I made myself at home the moment I walked in the door, immediately gravitating to the toys set out waiting for me...

...and the pawsome cat beds too! (Geez, wasn't I a skinny, scrawny little thing???) I was totally tuckered out at this point!

The whole day was just a dream come true, one Mommy and I will never forget. Life is pretty darn amazing for this little tortie today. I have a wonderful family who worships the ground I walk on, and loads of friends in the blogosphere who welcomed me with open arms.

Of all the kitties in the world, Mommy picked me. And I thank Cod for her every single day.

Note from Mommy: I thank Cod for you every single day too, precious girl!

Do you remember the day you moved to your forever home?

'Tis the Shedding Season #SundaySelfie

Meows from Mudpie!

Every morning when Mommy goes out to feed the birds, squirrels, and neighbor kitty, I'm waiting for her when she returns so she can hold the door open for me for a few minutes.

That's when this selfie was taken, and it's obvious from the loose furs showing that she hadn't taken time to "do my hair" yet! (During the hot, humid weather she brushes me 3-4 times a day!)

Cruising Vicariously through My Cozy Mystery

I love to cruise and have taken many of them in my life. We dragged our kids on a number of them until they were old enough to beg us to stop. Then we continued to cruise as a twosome or with friends.

I love the idea of settling into my own cabin with all my belongings. It’s great to stop at new ports of call and visit interesting places yet return to my own sanctuary at the end of the day. I love the vibrating excitement of life onboard. The pools, restaurants, piano bar, promenade, game rooms, and the glittering shops and art galleries are a wonder for the senses. It’s all very exciting and fun.

Since the pandemic hit, I’ve given up cruising. But I miss it! What’s a writer to do?

Planning a Vicarious Cruise

When writing the outline for the second book in the Magical Mystery Book Club, I pondered the perfect setting when it hit me – a cruise ship! I could take a cruise without ever leaving home, based on my vivid memories of all the ships I’ve traveled on.

I sorted through photos and reminisced about my favorite trips. I loved the adventures in Alaska, but my favorites are tropical – warm sunshine and sandy beaches call to me. My daughter and her family just returned from a trip to Hawaii and loved it. I’d never taken a Hawaiian cruise so set my scene there.

I spent the next week pouring through cruise websites and reviewing Hawaiian excursions. Then outlined a 7-day trip for my book club members.

The characters had a magnificent time. Well, not counting finding a dead body, but other than that! Even though it’s all in my mind, I got to take a Hawaiian cruise after all! Now I’m looking forward to doing it in real life. I just hope there are no vampires on board . . .

2022 Cat Writers' Association Certificate of Excellence

The last two years have been very unproductive writing years for me, so when the time came to choose my entries for the 2022 Cat Writers' Association Communications Contest (for Contest Year 2021) the pickings were pretty slim.

A highlight of 2021 was being asked to write for Jackson Galaxy's Cat Pawsitive Pro program. It was a pawsome opportunity to work with people who are making such a huge difference in the lives of cats. The cats I wrote about completely stole my heart, especially a sweet pair named Bob Meowly and Ebony.

I entered From Fast Friends To A Forever Home At Roice-Hurst Humane Society in the Written Article: Rescue & Advocacy category, and I'm so excited to announce we won a Certificate of Excellence for the article! While I may have only submitted one entry this year, I couldn't be happier that it's for a special project that I was so honored to be a part of.

I can hardly believe that in 6 years I've now won 16 Certificates and 2 Muse Medallions. Never in my wildest dreams did I think such a thing was possible when I joined the CWA back in 2013. Cats are my greatest passion and being recognized for my writing about them is truly a dream come true.
